Mixed Conditionals

Mixed conditionals bring together into the same sentence:

  1. a present or future result of a past condition, which means would + infinitive with if + had + past participle. (2 and 3 or 3 and 2) and
  2. a past result with a present or future condition which means would + have + past participle and if + simple past (4 and 1 or 1 and 4)
  1. Present or Future Result OF A PAST CONDITION
  1. a) Present Result of a Past Condition

This type of mixed conditional expresses a probable result in the present of an unreal past condition. Both of the situations are contrary to reality, the one in the past and the one in the present.

The tense in the 'if' clause is had + past participle and the tense in the main clause is would + infinitive.

If clause expresses the condition: If + had + past participle = If something had happened

Main clause expresses the result: would + infinitive = another thing would happen

Condition, THEN,  result NOW.

ATUNCI                                             ACUM

                        NOW                                                  THEN

You can also use other modals instead of „would” in the main clause when you need to express a probability or a permission, a recommendation or something else.

            THEN                                                NOW
