Global-Learning.ro - Just a little English

Acela - That (That one)

Aceea – That (That one)

Lectia video aici - Here the video lesson

We will learn how to say “that” and “those” in Romanian language. (Lectia noastra este despre “acela / aceea” si “aceia / acelea”, vom invata cum se spun in limba romana)

1) “that” – in English we have just one word for both masculin and feminin, in Romanian there are two words, one for masculin and neutral singular -"acela", and another one for feminin - "aceea"

2) “those” - in English we have just one word for both masculin and feminin, in Romanian there are two words, one for masculin - "aceia", and another one for feminin and neutral plural "acelea":

So I have categorized them into cases: the way we use them in Nominative, Accusative, Dative and then Genitive.

Nominative (for masculine, neutral singular)

Acela este fratele meu. (That one is my brother) – “acela” is a subject

Acela este tata. (That one is the father)

Acela este soțul meu. (That one is my husband)

Nominative (for feminine)

Aceea este sora mea. (That one is my sister)

Aceea este mama. (That one is the mother) – practically we understand here “my mother”, but instead of it, we say “the mother”.

Aceea este mătușa mea. (That one is my aunt)

Accusative (for masculine, neutral singular)

We see that in Accusative we are going to have the same word,  we just need a preposition, many times we need prepositions in Accusative.

Il vad pe acela. (I see that one) – as we see “acela” is the same word as in Nominative, but we have here the preposition “pe”. “Il” expresses the same person as "acela", it is a pronoun. Practically we use two times the direct object. Other time we are going to learn about these pronouns and how do we use them, but right now we focus on “acela”.

Eu merg la acela. (I go to that one) – it is a direction here, another preposition: "la"

Accusative (for feminine)

O văd pe aceea. (I see that one) – here “that one” is a lady, a girl, it is a feminine one.

Eu merg la aceea. (I go to that one)

Dative (for masculine, neutral singular)

Eu îi dau aceluia ceva. (I give something to that one) – the word is different this time, we changed “acela” into “aceluia”, which means “to that one”, let’s say “I give something to that one”, this means Dative.

Eu îi spun aceluia ceva. (I say something to that one)

Dative (for feminine)

Eu îi dau aceleia ceva. (I give something to that one – a feminine person, a lady or a girl)

Eu îi spun aceleia ceva. (I tell something to that one)

Genitive (for masculine, neutral singular)

Mașina aceluia este nouă. (The car of that one is new) – as we see the word in Genitive is exactly like the word in Dative.

Părerea aceluia este corectă. (The opinion of that one is right) – it is a possession.

În fața aceluia este o mașină. (In front of that one is a car)

Genitive (for feminine)

Fiica aceleia este frumoasă. (The daughter of that one is beautiful)

În fața aceleia este clădirea. (In front of that one is the building)

În jurul aceleia este un parc. (Around that one is a park)
